FLEAS: FACTS AND FABLES

FACTS

  • Female fleas begin feeding on pets within minutes and lay 40 to 50 eggs per day
  • Fleas emerge as early as 3 weeks
  • Temperature and humidity drive flea population growth

- Temperatures between 70f to 85f are optimal; temperatures above 95f are

unfavorable

- Optimal relative humidity is 70% to 85%

  • Shady, protected outdoor areas are preferred sites for flea hosts and flea larval development
  • Direct sunlight and heavy rain are lethal to flea larvae
  • Microclimates in the home can support flea development

- Nylon carpet fibers absorb water from the air which creates favorable humidity for larval development

- Larvae can develop in grooves and cracks in hardwood floors

  • Fleas can hitchhike into homes on people and infest indoor-only pets
  • It can take 6 to 8 weeks for a flea infestation to become established in a home and at least that long for all life stages to be exhausted one treatment begins
